Year in the New Testament Podcast Episode 11: Luke 5-7
In this week’s episode, Jay and Jimmy discuss material from the Gospel from Luke 5-7, focusing on the unexpected followers of Jesus in his movement about the arrival of the Kingdom of God, the blessings and woes, loving enemies, and a scandalous woman.
First time to listen — any way to get a transcript of conversation (I want to go back to parts I remember but can’t maneuver audio too well)
2 things I didn’t hear that I have struck me hearing from others in the past:
1. John the Baptist’s Q: “Are you the one who was to come or should we expect someone else?” Wow, from John this is quite the question. Does Jesus care about John? absolutely … he says “among those born of women there is no one greater than John” Jesus is carrying out the ministry of which John had spoken. John’s life purpose was used.
2. Jesus says, “Do you SEE this woman?” What does it mean to “see”? Can we really “see” people … or do we just look through them as a stereotype and not real individual people. They saw a sinner; Jesus saw her heart. Where do we see sinners instead of hearts?
Jean, a transcript would be great, and we’ve looked into services that do that for us. Unfortunately, we can’t provide one right now. Some of our episodes do have content markers in the player, but we haven’t had a chance to add those to this episode yet.
On your comments, I think there is little doubt that Jesus had deep concern for John (who we find in Luke was Jesus’ cousin). And it would have been difficult for John to have anticipated and recognized Jesus as the “one to come”, and yet be stuck in prison. It certainly would create questions, I think.
On seeing: YES YES YES! Jesus _really_ saw her, and he didn’t define or objectify her by her sins or mistakes. He saw her as a woman with great love. And I want to see people like Jesus sees them.
